Pat and Frank's

Pat and Barney are today's Home Team Birthday Boys. Both are well known on either side of the aisle, and neither runs competing butcher shops in Oak Lawn Illinois.

Ta Daaaaa!

Not only did I not have any birthday caricature for yesterday, but today's Home Team Birthday Lady refused to share her big day. So, Happy Birthday Nancy Pelosi!

Down the...

What do you call a Senator who's served in office for 35 years?

Happy Birthday Orrin Hatch!

Inadvertently Promoting

Happy Birthday Howard Coble!

And I haven't been in the House of Representatives continuously since 1985, but It seems to me that these days we have more important issues to legislate about than whether or not it's ok to put new subtitles over movie clips of Hitler.

I could be wrong though, I'm just a cartoonist.

A Study In Contrasts

While most of America is drinking, getting ready to drink, or sleeping it off, Home Team is asking a serious question. First, let me present the birthday boys....

---------------------

Roger Brooke Taney. Federalist from Maryland. 11th Attorney General, Secretary of War, 12th Secretary of the Treasury, and 5th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

----------------------------

Bayard Rustin. Social Reformer from Pennysylvania.

------------------

Since in the modern polemic it is incorrect to phrase a question as follows....

Who was worse for America?

A new era

James Madison, our fourth President, was born in Virginia. Today. Long ago. He considered himself a Democratic Republican during his tenure. What might he consider himself in today's political environment?

Dr. No

Happy Birthday to Tom Coburn!

Read his Wikipedia article to find out why he's called Dr. No. I'll be checking out his InDesign file to find out why there's no border on his card here...

Well...

Today would be William Casey's Birthday. He died in 1987, silenced before his testimony could be given before Congress.

If you are at all interested in our country's involvement in Afghanistan, you might also find this man's involvement in the region significant.

Duckworthy.

Happy Birthday to Ladda Tammy Duckworth.

Please read up on her and her opponent in the upcoming election. Last go-around the margin of victory was around 4000 votes. In the Chicagoland area, where the perception is that machine politics have cut the average voter out of the decision making process, we have a prime example of a clear choice between two very different candidates.

Notably, the current Representative has been "drawn out of the district" since being elected. I only stated the voter still has a choice, not that the machine isn't trying to take to away.

---------------------
Also…

You probably already know about this birthday Player.

-------------------------
But…

It's your last chance to get to know Kent Conrad, because he already told us he's not gonna run again.

Super Tuesday?

Super Tuesday? We'll see about that.

Not the fruit

Marion Barry Jr. Has got to be a Classic Home Teamer... Someday. Since he's still active in politics though, let's just say Happy Birthday Player!

Long John and The Justice

Only one of these Classics developed "a reputation for competence". Sounds like a backhanded compliment, but when you stop a moment to think about life in the 21st century that might be a very strong endorsement.

Happy Birthday John Wentworth!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy Birthday Robert Cooper Grier!

Petticoat Rule

Today is the birthday of Home Team Classic  Susanna Salter. Mrs. Salter was the first woman elected to office in United States history! Unfortunately for me, no photograph was available. On Wikipedia. If anybody was to look a little harder, thought, they might find one. Or two.

----------------------------------------------------
Fortunately for me, Ken Salazar is all over the place, and it's his birthday too!

Interesting day, if you're not into politics.

Happy Birthday Gladys Spellman! Our favorite kind of Classic Home Teamer, Gladys was not involved in any scandals and was so well-liked she was reelected while she was comatose. I wish I was joking.

In the POP world, however, the real birthday celebration is for Bill Gaines, Booker Huffman, and Ke$ha. We're classy like that.
